The Middle Fork of the Salmon River
Known to most as simply the Middle Fork, this alpine whitewater river is arguably the best rafting trip in the country. Hot springs, crystal clear water, continuous whitewater, world-class fly fishing, all located in the largest wilderness area of the lower 48 states, make this a trip that is memorable for anyone who ventures near.
The river winds its way north to meet the Main Salmon, traveling 100 miles and dropping almost 6,000 feet in elevation during the journey. Alpine scenery eventually gives way to the vast landscape of Impassable Canyon, with soaring walls of granite.
Continuous Whitewater
The Middle Fork is famous for the incredibly clear, continuous whitewater. Few flat stretches make it easy to find adventure around each river bend. Most of the rapids are Class I and II, but there are a few big Class III or IV rapids each day. Perhaps the most amazing is that under normal circumstances, trips can travel the full 100 miles of the river without having to portage any of the rapids. The river begins as a swift mountain stream, but gains strength from multiple feeder streams and waterfalls throughout the journey. By the time you reach the take-out, located 4 miles after the confluence with the Main Salmon, you'll be traveling on a huge waterway.
The Hot Springs
Hot springs add a special element to a Middle Fork trip. Some are riverside and others can be accessed from multiple camps. They are a special treat on early or late season trips when the weather is cool.
World Class Fishing
The Middle Fork is known by anglers throughout the state for its cutthroat and rainbow trout fishing. Fly fishing entertains every angler as the crystal clear water makes the numerous trout visible as they swim up to take the fly. The fishing is great throughout the summer, but it does improve during August and September when the water level drops.
